Course description:

This course focuses on taking part in a variety of sports and examining sport and leisure in the community. It will look at the job opportunities which exist within the industry, the sport and leisure facilities in the local area and how they are organised and managed. It will appeal to those interested in practical PE who are keen to learn in a hands-on way.

Course structure:

There will be 8 lessons a fortnight, 4 on one day per week. The course is made up of 4 units of study, 3 of which are divided into 4 or 5 assignments to complete the unit. The fourth unit is an externally set project on “starting work in sport and leisure”.

There are both practical and theory lessons and students may spend whole days out of school doing research or participating in practical activities such as bowling, windsurfing or golf. With this in mind students will need to have a willingness and interest in meeting new challenges and taking part in a variety of sports.

Homework:

Time in lessons is built into the programme for students to complete assignments. However, students are encouraged to spend time out of school doing more extensive research.

Assessment:

The assessment of this course is 100% continuous assessment, there is NO EXAM. The overall qualification is graded as a pass, merit or distinction. Assignments are marked against criteria set by the examination board. The assignments are issued and completed throughout a unit of work and an overall grade for the unit awarded once all the work for that unit has been completed. This allows the student, teacher and parent to track progress.

 

Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:

All materials, resources and equipment will be provided for the students along with a tracksuit which students will wear to all BTEC Sport & Leisure lessons and activities throughout the 2 year course.

Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:

The course provides a suitable qualification for students to progress onto a range of higher level qualifications or complete further related units to achieve a BTEC Introductory Diploma. The skills developed are valued both by employers and education to enable students to manage time effectively, take responsibility for their own learning and meet deadlines. They make excellent preparation for entry to
Blatch 6.
