The BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A* - C.
It is graded at Pass (grade C), Merit (grade B) and Distinction (grade A,A*).

Course description:

This course will introduce learners to the wide options available in the retail sector. It covers the essential areas that learners need to be aware of to understand the various store operations which take place. Students will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

Course structure:

Students will attend lessons for one full day per week.

Homework:

Cash machineHomework will be set on a weekly basis and comprise of tasks which will contribute to the coursework assignment for each unit. It will not always be a formal written piece but may take the form of observation in a retail environment.

Assessment:

The assessment of this course is 100% continuous assessment, there is NO EXAM. Over the period of 2 years there will be six coursework assignments, one for each unit studied which will work out at about one per term divided into manageable tasks. The work will be monitored regularly in class and homework will contribute to the final grade.

Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:

Students are requested to come to lessons prepared with general equipment for lessons and a computer memory stick. Other materials will be provided.

Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:

This option can lead to study of a wide range of A level and BTEC National courses which can potentially lead on to higher education. Brighton University are currently developing a Degree in Retail for those who wish to continue to study this subject.

Career opportunities supported by this subject:

Students will have the opportunity of following 10% of the UK population into employment in the retail sector which is booming across the globe. Training and skill development are actively encouraged in the sector leading to fast career progression. Jobs available in retail are varied and diverse including, Buying, IT, Merchandising, Accounting, Personnel, through to Store and Company Management or being your own boss!
