The course name is ABC Awards Level 1 Motor Vehicle Studies (and will either be a certificate or a diploma).

Course description:

Motor mechanicThis course is offered by school in conjunction with a college of further education, currently City College Brighton & Hove. Students will attend for a whole day each week, developing a range of practical skills related to the Motor Trade. This course is designed to give students skills, experience and an insight into careers in the motor vehicle industry. The course contains practical elements and the theory that underpins the practical. All equipment, materials and resources will be provided for students, but those following this course will need to provide their own appropriate, old clothing (not school uniform). All safety equipment including boots will be provided. Students considering this option need to enjoy practical work, be interested in mechanics and cars and be motivated to work independently.

Course structure and content:

During the course students will undertake units of work by completing theory based training and practical tasks. Each unit may consist of both practical and theory based activities, but in some cases there may only be theory work to complete. Below is a typical list of the units covered on the course.

Homework:

Homework will be set as appropriate. Students without access to a computer at home will be able to complete the work in school in their own time.

Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:

Having developed a range of skills and understanding on topics covered on the course, assessments will be practical tasks taken at times appropriate to the group and students. During the course the tutor will take photos as evidence of students’ progress. These photos will be used to help produce the final portfolio.

Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:

All materials, resources and equipment will be provided for students. Access to a PC at home will be useful but not essential. Clothes which students don’t mind getting stained and marked are advised for most practical sessions. All health and safety equipment will be provided.

Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:

Courses exist within Brighton & Hove (and elsewhere) for students to continue studying Motor Vehicle studies and related vehicle subjects including vehicle design and development. This study can be at differing levels to suit individual students, up to and including degree level and beyond.

Career opportunities supported by this subject:

There are many jobs within the motor industry including; motor vehicle mechanic, motor cycle mechanic, fast fit mechanic (tyres and exhausts), engine/gearbox overhaul, electrical/electronic diagnostic specialist, vehicle valeter, design/race mechanic, mobile mechanic, tutor/lecturer, own your own garage and / or MOT test station!
