Leisure and Tourism - GCSE (Double Award)
Course description:
Leisure and Tourism has been designed at GCSE level to give students a broad overview and to provide a basis for related industry employment or further and higher education courses. Leisure and Tourism is a fast growing, people-orientated industry and the course will look to encourage students to:
- Develop an understanding of how leisure and tourism organisations operate
- Gain knowledge and understanding of UK travel and tourism activities and destinations
- See how the industry meets peoples’ leisure and tourism needs
- Develop knowledge about how leisure and tourism organisations market their products/services
- Understand how important customer service is in leisure and tourism organisations
- Research employment opportunities
Course structure:
Leisure and Tourism is studied for five lessons per fortnight. Some trips will be made where appropriate and key outside speakers will be invited to contribute to units where applicable. The Unit 1 exam will be taken initially at the end of Year 10.
Homework:
Homework will be set each week and will embrace a variety of tasks which will include research. Typically homework will be set to last 30 - 45 minutes. Files will also be expected to be kept up to date and ordered and will be checked regularly.
Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:
The course is divided into three units.
Unit 1: Investigating Leisure and Tourism.
Unit 2: Marketing in Leisure and Tourism.
Unit 3: Customer Service in Leisure and Tourism.
All units carry equal weighting in terms of marks. Units 2 and 3 are assessed internally as coursework.
Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:
A textbook will be supplied for this course. All work will be kept in a student file.
Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:
In the Sixth Form there are two related courses which can be studied
- Travel and Tourism ‘A’ Level (two year course)
- BTEC Travel and Tourism (a one year course where a pass is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grade C, with the opportunity to achieve B and A grades).
Career opportunities supported by this subject:
At university level there are many degree courses now available which specialise in the leisure, tourism and travel industries. There are also opportunities to gain entry directly to these industries, usually through employment with training
