Course description:

Photo of cliffs by the seaThis is a Level 2 course. Students will learn the skills required to care for a wide range of client groups. There will be opportunities at the beginning of the course to find out about a wide range of careers within Health and Social Care including; nursing, working with children, social work and therapy.

Students will learn to develop their communication skills by taking part in role plays, observing others and reflecting on their own experiences. Students will be encouraged to apply their own skills to a practical setting.

Students will learn how to identify individual needs and explore factors that may influence health. There will be an opportunity to care for our virtual baby. Students learn by completing projects and assignments.

Course structure:

The course consists of 3 units:

  • Communication and rights
  • Supporting health, safety and wellbeing
  • Human Life-Span Development

Homework

Homework will be set each week and will embrace a variety of tasks to support classwork and assignments.

Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. There is no final examination. The higher grades awarded are equivalent to 2 GCSE grades at A* - C.

Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:

All work will be kept in an A4 file which students need to supply. Other textbooks and necessary materials will be detailed to students at the beginning of the course.

Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:

A BTEC First Certificate in Health & Social Care (Early Years) will provide a good grounding to go onto a more advanced course such as a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Health & Social Care.

Career opportunities supported by this subject:

With further training, students could go into careers such as paediatric nursing, nursery and primary teaching. For those wishing to enter employment immediately, opportunities exist in nurseries, hospitals and primary care trusts.
