Course description:

This course is offered by the school in conjunction with ‘Look Fantastic’ Ltd., a company with extensive experience and expertise in delivering such training. Based in a specialist facility in Portslade Community College, students will attend for a whole day each week, developing a range of practical skills related to the hair & beauty industry. Students considering this option need to be interested in the hair & beauty trades and an interest in fashion would be useful. The qualification is Hairdressing - City & Guilds Level 1.

Course structure and contents:

The course comprises of practical work in a salon training environment. Each student will be expected to work with others and with a Head-block. They will use professional materials and tools and will be expected to follow industry standard Health & safety practices.

Theory will be covered during the day and some homework will be required. During the course competitions will be planned to develop team work and explore creativity. There will be practical assessments where the practical skills of each student will be observed by the class teacher / assessor and every unit has a project.
There is an end of course On-line test, which is used to check knowledge and understanding.

This course has a pass-credit-distinction level depending on the effort and standard of work.

Unit 1 Finding out about customer service
Unit 2 Basic salon reception duties
Unit 3 Personal presentation
Unit 4 Follow health and safety practice
Unit 5 Introduction to hairdressing services
Unit 6 Introduction to basic perming and colouring
Unit 9 Industry and occupation awareness

Homework:

Homework will be set as appropriate, to support the learning undertaken during the practical sessions.

Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:

During the course students will undertake units of work by completing theory based training and practical tasks. Each unit may consist of both practical and theory based activities, but in some cases there may only be theory work to complete. Students will produce a large portfolio of evidence throughout the course.

Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:

All materials, resources and equipment will be provided for students. Access to a PC at home will be useful but not essential. Clothes which students don’t mind getting stained and marked are advised for most practical sessions. All health and safety equipment will be provided.

Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:

Opportunities exist within local colleges for students to continue studying hair & beauty and other courses of a similar nature. We hope to be able to run an appropriate course at Blatch 6 from September 2009.

Career opportunities supported by this subject:

There are many employment opportunities for qualified Hair and Beauty specialists including; working in a salon, stylist, salon manager or manageress, salon owner, working on a cruise liner, freelance session worker, technician, tutor, theatre work & TV work.
