Catering and Hospitality Level 2
Course description:
Catering and Hospitality has been designed to give a broad overview to provide a basis for related industry employment or further and higher education courses. The new qualification (City & Guilds/ NVQ) in Catering & Hospitality is a vocational qualification that takes into account the latest approach to cooking and food safety as well as aspects of customer service and event management issues. Students will have the opportunity to work within the catering industry as part of a work experience package.
There are opportunities to progress on to level 3 in this or related courses.
Catering and Hospitality is a fast growing, people-orientated industry and the course will look to encourage students to:
- Gain knowledge and understanding of UK Catering and Hospitality through practical workshops in a purpose built professional kitchen and hospitality environment.
- Develop knowledge about how Catering and Hospitality organisations market their products/services.
- Understand how important customer service is in Catering and Hospitality organisations.
- Develop skills and to boost self confidence and personal effectiveness.
- Research employment opportunities.
Course structure:
Catering and Hospitality is studied for one whole day each week. Some trips will be made where appropriate and key outside speakers will be invited to contribute to units where applicable. Some teaching will be through ‘Master classes’ and ‘professional practice.
Homework:
Homework will be set each week and will embrace a variety of tasks which will include research. Typically homework will be set to last 30 - 45 minutes. Files will also be expected to be kept up to date and ordered and will be checked periodically.
Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:
The course will be assessed through practical work and a coursework portfolio which is internally assessed and externally verified.
Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:
Resources will be supplied for this course and lessons will take place in the catering training room opening April 2008. All work will be kept in a student file.
Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:
Achievement of the level 2 qualification (GCSE A*-C equivalent) will allow students to progress on to Advanced level (level 3) in any related or non related subject. The course provides progression opportunities both directly into employment and to further learning opportunities within employment, or to further study. It provides a suitable basis for further study at 16+ offering progression on to academic and a variety of vocational courses including Advanced Diploma in Hospitality and Catering (from 2009), Applied A levels Manufacturing/Leisure and Tourism/Hospitality and Catering and Apprenticeships.
Career opportunities supported by this subject:
At university level there are many degree courses now available which specialise in the Catering and Hospitality .There are also opportunities to gain entry directly to these industries, usually through employment with training. It could enhance career opportunities to provide a satisfying and worthwhile course of study for students who do not progress to further study in the subject. It is also seen as advantageous to careers in care.
