All students do P.E. throughout Key Stage 4; the details given below are for the GCSE Option.
Course description:
All students follow practical modules in football, basketball, badminton, netball, rounders, trampolining and athletics. The Edexcel Examination Board also offers a wide range of other sports, termed as ’off site’ activities. Students can select an off site activity, but must have access to a coach who delivers the practical work and awards a coursework grade, and students must cover any costs.
When all practical modules are completed the students select their strongest four to go forward into a formal practical examination at Easter of Year 11. They must choose either trampolining or athletics. Students are required to follow an observation and analysis programme based on 1 of their 4 sports, part of which is the completion of a Personal Exercise Programme, which has to be planned and performed over 6 weeks.
There will be a written examination of 1 hour and 45 minutes based on the following areas:
- Exercise and Training
- Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Physical Activity and Sport Anatomy
- Physiology (applied)
Course structure:
The P.E. Department ensure that much of the syllabus is delivered practically. Depending on the time of year and stage of the syllabus at least 2 of these lessons will be totally practically based.
Homework:
Set regularly, approximately 45 minutes per week, in the form of answering set questions (some research required), tests and related worksheets.
Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:
60% of marks for practical work 40% theoretical work
Practical coursework assessments take place at the end of each module. Students then select 4 practical activities which are taken forward and reassessed in a series of practical exams.
Written examination in Year 10 and Year 11 (mock).
Personal Exercise Programme completion by end of Autumn Term in Year 11.
Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:
The P.E. Department provide a textbook. Revision Guide available from P.E. Department (purchased from staff). Correct and appropriate P.E. kit required.
Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:
BTEC National Level 3 in Sports in Year 12 & 13 at Blatch 6.

Please note:
students wishing to follow this course should be involved in sport both at school and at home. Due to the practical nature of this subject, numbers need to be limited and should the course be oversubscribed then students who have demonstrated their commitment to sports through regularly attending school sports clubs will have priority.
In order to support the PE department in assessing ability in the Athletics module, all GCSE PE students are expected to participate in Spors Day at the end of Year 10.
