Performing Arts Production BTEC Level 2
Course description:
This is a new level 2 course with the Performing Arts Curriculum Team, concentrating on the production side of theatre and in particular lighting and sound operation. Lasting 2 years, the course is worth the equivalent of two GCSEs. Classes will take place predominantly in the Windmill Theatre, which is fully equipped with sound and lighting rigs. As a part of the course students will act as crew for many of the productions staged in the Windmill Theatre. To follow this new and exciting course you should have an interest in theatre, be hard working and committed. In return, you will gain qualifications and experience that could lead you on to a job in the performing arts

Course structure:
This is a practical work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. For further details, please see Performing Arts staff.
Students follow a compulsory unit, in our case ‘Production - Crewing’ and two specialist units which are:
- Lighting Operations
- Sound Operations
This allows students to specialise in areas of particular interest to them.
Homework:
Homework will be set covering projects and assignments; it will also include setting up stage sets, attendance at rehearsals and productions as well as the recording of set-ups in a diary or coursework folder.
Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:
The course is project based and is continually assessed throughout. Exact details of assessments will be given later to students opting for it.
Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:
An A4 folder, lined and plain paper, basic stationery / drawing equipment etc. These will be needed to record theory notes and set-up details. Students will also need their own adjustable spanner or set of spanners for use with lighting and sound equipment.
Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:
AS and ‘A’ Level Drama are both very popular and successful courses at Blatch 6. Students can also go on to study BTEC National Award, Certificate or Diploma in Performing Arts.
