Spanish NVQ Level 1 and 2
Course description:
This course is designed for beginners, who have not studied Spanish before. It is only open to students who are NOT currently studying two languages. Students will learn practical Spanish, which they can use on a visit to Spain. Typical topics include:
- Ordering food and drink in a bar/restaurant
- Arranging accomodation
- Meeting people and giving personal details
- Finding out about facilities in a town/region of Spain or a Spanish-speaking country
- Finding out about the culture and traditions of Spain and Spainish-speaking countries

Course structure:
Year 10: 5 lessons per fortnight. Year 11: 5 lessons per fortnight
Homework:
Homework will be set weekly. A variety of tasks are set for homework. Some examples include:
- Learning vocabulary and role-plays for assessment
- Completion of tasks for the portfolio
Assessment, weighting and timings of assessments:
Students will build up a portfolio of work for assessment by an external verifier. They will complete assessments and assignments during the course. There will be no terminal examination to complete.
If you take this course your level of achievement will be determined by your progress. Achievement at Level 1 is equivalent to G.C.S.E. grades D – G. Achievement at Level 2 is equivalent to G.C.S.E. grade C.
Books, equipment, materials and resources recommended / needed:
All students will need a bilingual Spanish - English dictionary.
Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:
Many colleges offer NVQ Language Units. Students can progress up the ladder of language qualification. There are five levels, from Level 1 to 5. Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE Grade C and Level 5 is degree level. Employers are familiar with and recognise NVQ qualifications.
Career opportunities supported by this subject:
As this is a vocational qualification, the study of Spanish will be tailored to a workplace context. Knowledge of Spanish would be useful in a whole range of careers from Travel & Tourism (air cabin crew, travel courier, working in a Brighton hotel) to the Service Sector (e.g working for American Express or at an international bank in London).
