In addition to completing a compulsory Short Course in Religious Education, students have the option of taking R.E as a Full GCSE Course at Key Stage 4. This course is ideal for any student with an interest in contemporary moral issues. A study of the theories of punishment and religious teaching on justice and punishment. Students will look at contemporary case studies.

Religion and Medical Issues

A study of controversial issues such as transplant surgery, fertility treatments and genetic engineering.

Conflict and Peace

A study of contemporary conflicts including Israel / Palestine, bullying and family problems. Students will look at the theories behind war.

Religion and Politics

This section concentrates on the Christian basis for Government and asks students to consider whether religion and politics should be kept separate.

Religion and the environment

A study of current environmental concerns and the religious teaching on the responsibility humans should demonstrate towards the environment.

Course structure:

As a full GCSE course, students will attend 5 one hour lessons per fortnight. The short course is run alongside PSE in Year 10.

Opportunities for study beyond Key Stage 4:

This course helps develop the analytical skills of all students. As such it is of use to anyone considering humanities subjects beyond Key Stage 4. Religious Studies is available at Blatch 6 at AS and A2. This includes the study of ethical issues and the philosophy of religion.

Career opportunities supported by this subject:

People who work in a wide variety of environments need to consider a range of ethical issues; doctors, civil servants, lawyers, police officers deal with the practicalities of the issues that are explored in Religious Studies. So the course is not just for those hoping to become rabbis, vicars, monks or nuns!
