All 3 core subjects improved on last year’s already strong performance and met our target expectations. English and Science were 13% higher than national averages at Level 5+ and Maths was 9% higher. Level 6+ figures also far exceeded national statistics.
Girls moved up to 90% and above Level 5+ in Maths and English; boys moved up to over 80% Level 5+ in all three core subjects.
Science and Maths Level 7+ performance exceeded forecasts and 2007 results.
The breadth of curriculum success at KS3 is shown in teacher-assessed end of KS3 Level 5+ figures: PE 92%, Spanish 94%, Music 95%, Design 91%, French 89%, ICT 84%, Geography 84%, German and History 80%.

5A*-C figures rose strongly to 80.1%, one of the strongest sets of results in this area, ahead of targets and national statistics and up from 75% last year. All 3 core subjects performed well, with English rising from 65 to 73%, Maths from 65 to 75% and Science from 67 to 85% at 5 A*-C.
The 5A*-C figure including Maths and English (increasingly favoured by the government) smashed targets, rising from 55% in 2007 to 64.5% in 2008. Intervention strategies are a large part of this success and will continue to be put in place in 2008. Personalising learning is a key focus for BMS.
There were notable rises too compared to last year at 5A*-C in optional subjects: for example, French (70% from 58%), Graphics (70% from 49%), Resistant Materials (86% from 62%), Textiles (78% from 68%), Art (90% from 82%), Drama (95% from 86%), Music (92% from 73%) and PE (87% from 74%).
Top end performance grew strongly, with A*/A grades up from 18% in 2007 to 25% in 2008. Boys were strong too at A*/A compared to national figures. A*/A grades were especially strong in Music (53%) , Performing Arts 46%), Media (38%), Statistics (62%), Science (34%), Spanish (47%) and Electronics (45%).
KS5 results
AS grades for A-C were 58.9%, slightly down from 62.9% last year. 32.5% achieved A-B with 92.7% reaching A-E.
At AS, 36.8% achieved A-C grades, compared to 37.4% last year. Our A-B results at AS rose to 26.4%, up from 22% in 2007.
