Life at Blatch6
A Message from our students
When you enter the Sixth Form you'll notice big differences from life in your lower school years. You will be doing subjects you particulary enjoy so the incentive to work harder will lead to a faster pace of learning. However, smaller classes and more time to devote to your subjects make this learning managable.
Teachers' expectations of sixth formers differ from those you are used to. You'll be expected to act more maturelywith respect to your work and in the way you behave towards others. But you'll find that teachers are more approachable and ready to advise and help you with your work. You'll also discover that free time is allocated in the timetable, helping you manage your work.
With the AS/AS system, you'll be taking exams at the end of both years. The advantage is that you will see how well you are doing at the end of the first year and be able to decide just how hard you need to work in the second year to get the grades you are looking for. As a bonus, you will have achieved up to 50 per cent of your final marks before you start the second year.
If you are going on to higher education you can always get advice from the Blatch 6 tutors and senior members of staff. If you are leaving education after taking your A Levels, support and guidance are on hand from our careers advisors.
Blatch 6 is a happy and very supportive sixth form college with a great balance of work and social life. If you haven't paid us a visit yet, we'd like to invite you to see for yourself. Whatever you decide, we wish you the best of luck in the future!
- Blatch6 Students
A course for you
We offer a wide range of AS, A and BTEC qualifications. In order to accommodate a greater range of subject combinations, the Sixth Form attend six hour-long sessions until 4p.m. with free periods timetabled accordingly. We corroborate with Hove Park Sixth Form to allow greater student choice.
Student Support
Students rate the support advice and counselling by the Sixth Form tutor team as being of the highest order. We aim to be accessible, approachable and positive. We are always prepared to give our students the time they need to think carefully through any academic, vocational or personal matter. This includes employment and course advice together with individual assistance with applications to Higher Education. Learning support is available for students when required.
A Studious Atmosphere
Our aim is to provide a safe yet demanding environment within which all students can make a smooth transition from GCSE work to the greater independence and sophistication of Sixth Form study. We expect students to attend all timetabled lessons and tutorials. Each individual is seen as unique and is treated as such.
Extensive Social Events
Blatch6 has a wide variety of events during the year including social, community and academic activities.
Student Union
The college views the Student Union as an integral part of the sixth form including charity fund-raising, social events or NUS support.
Each year, students elect a president and vice president to lead the sixth form student body and represent their views, in a number of different forums. Subcommittees include sports, entertainment and common room.
The student union enables sixth form students to play a full and active part in all aspects of sixth form life.
Students and the wider community
Students are encouraged to broaden their range of experiences by working with other sections of the community, both in and out of Blatchington Mill. Students have spent time working in various departments at the Martlets Hospice, gaining reception skills, retail work in the charity shop and contributing to others in the garden and café.
Within Blatchington Mill, sixth form students have participated in pair reading schemes with pupils lower down the school in need of assistance.
