Level 2 courses

Level 2 courses are at an intermediate level. They are usually for students who want to work at the equivalent of GCSE’s and who may want to focus on a particular area of study, e.g travel and tourism, art and design, construction or hairdressing. Students will be expected to participate in supplementary subjects to make up a full course of study therefore these students must show they are able to study at this level by achieving grade A – C at GCSE in at least two subjects. Some of these courses may be provided by external agencies to ensure a good skills base for our students.

Level 3 courses

Level 3 courses are at an advanced level of study. To begin work on advanced level courses, students must achieve a minimum of 5 GCSE’S at grades A* to C in at least four different subjects. Some subjects will ask for grade Bs or for prior skills to have been acquired. Details are available upon request.

A Levels

An A Level consists of four units studied over two years, marked by externally assessed exams and internally assessed coursework. Two units are generally assessed at the end of the first year, resulting in a qualification called the AS level (Advanced Subsidiary level). Another two modules are then assessed at the end of the second year, making up the A2. The A2 does not form a qualification in its own right and a satisfactory completion of both AS and A2 units is required for a completed A level in a given subject.

Btec level 3 courses are also offered in some subjects. These are of the equivalent standard to A levels but are usually a two year course, consisting of assessed coursework units.

The normal practice is to take four subjects in year 12, reducing to three at A2, although some students continue with four.

The Creative and Media diploma is also being offered this year. This will be a full time two year qualification in itself. Details are available in the course descriptors.
