Information about EMA

The Educational Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment made by the government of up to £30, paid directly to the students who stay on in the Sixth Form. These payments are to help out with things like books, travel, equipment student’s costs. There are also bonuses of £100 if you remain on the course and make good progress with your learning. Entitlement to EMA will apply to households with an annual income of £30,810 or less for the tax year 2005 / 2006.

Can I get it?

You could get EMA if:

  • You are 16, 17 or 18 and about to leave, or have already left, compulsory education.
  • The annual income of your household is up to the relevant EMA threshold.
  • You are thinking of starting a full-time further education course at a college or school, an LSC-funded Entry for Employment (e2e) programme, or a course that leads to an Apprenticeship.
  • Your learning programme lasts at least ten weeks
  • You meet the relevant residency criteria.
