Textiles Technology AS A2

Course content

Students are expected to equip themselves with basic sewing equipment and a sewing machine. They will be expected to provide materials and all necessary components for coursework items they are making.

AS Year 1:

Unit 1 Materials, components and application
This is the basic theory. It includes fibres, their manufacture, uses, properties and characteristics. Decorative techniques and dyeing components.

Unit 2 Learning through designing and making 2 small coursework projects totalling 50 hours. Portfolio of work plus two completed products.

A2 Year 2:

Unit 1 as above is developed in more detail.
Unit 3 Design and manufacture. This looks particularly at the textiles industry and how it works.
Unit 2 and 4 combine for coursework. One project, total 60 hours.
Portfolio of work plus a completed product.

Assessment

AS:
1 X 2hr exam ( 50% of the mark )
Coursework ( 50% of the mark )

A2 :
Unit 1 2hr written ( 25% of the marks )
Units 2 & 4 coursework ( 50% of the marks )
Unit 3 2hr written paper ( 25% of the marks )

Possible Careers

Fashion designer, textile designer, interior decoration, fashion journalism, clothing buyer or working in the textile industry.
