Law AS A2

Exam Board AQA

Course Content

The AS syllabus covers four modules, two at AS and two at A2:

Law making and the legal system

Module one includes a study of the court system, including juries and magistrates, as well as the legal profession. This includes court visits, and a trip to the Houses of Parliament to see how laws are made.

The concept of liability

Module Two looks at criminal and civil law in practice, and students are expected to apply their knowledge to practical problem solving.

Criminal law - offences against the person

Module 3 deals with more complex criminal law, including murder, manslaughter and non fatal offences. Again, the emphasis is on applying this law to practical problem scenarios.

Criminal law - property offences and concepts of law

Module 4 covers a range of property offences- theft, fraud, burglary, robbery and criminal damage.

It also considers the links between law, justice and morality, with students studying and discussing cases currently in the news.

Students are also encouraged to discuss and debate legal issues and problems throughout the course, as well as looking at current affairs which involve issues of legal interest.

Assessment

Assessment is by exam only - there is no coursework.
Students will normally sit one exam in January and one module in May.
Students should have grade C or above in English at GCSE, although exceptions may be considered in individual circumstances.

Possible Careers

This course is ideal for those students considering a career in Law or simply wanting to find out more about the way in which the legal system operates, and how it affects lives.
