English Literature AS A2

Exam Board AQA specification B

Course Content

English Literature is a well-established, popular course. The Year 12 course will cater both for students aiming to progress to A2 Level and also for those wishing to gain an AS qualification. Each group will be taught by two tutors. There are two units of assessment at each level involving both written examination and coursework tasks.

The course is designed to encourage students to read widely and independently, to explore literary texts for their own intrinsic interest and significance and to set them within their appropriate literary, cultural and historical contexts. Students will become able to discuss literary texts critically and with an awareness of the range of interpretations provoked in different readers at different times.

At AS level, students will study a minimum of six texts: two novels, two collections of poetry and two drama texts. This will include coursework on a play by Shakespeare and one other drama text. Each piece has an upper word limit of 1500 words. Two novels, one written after 1990, will be studied, as well as two collections of poetry from 1800-1945.

During the A2 course, students will study texts containing elements of the Gothic genre, for examination. At least one text will have been written before 1800. Students will then prepare two pieces of coursework where a greater degree of independence in terms of choice of texts is offered. One piece will be comparative while the other will apply a piece of critical analysis to a literary text.

Assessment

  • AS; one coursework folder and one exam.
  • A2; one coursework folder and one exam.

Possible Careers

This qualification enables candidates to progress from the standard already reached at GCSE through to Advanced Subsidiary GCE and Advanced GCE to a level where, if they wish, they would be able to pursue English Studies at degree or equivalent level. It can lead to opportunities in a variety of careers such as teaching, publishing and journalism.
