Course Content

BTEC National Award in Dance offers an engaging programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills for students wishing to pursue careers in the performing arts. The modular course encompasses a range of skills that will develop participants’ competency in the practical and theoretical study of dance. The course includes contemporary technique, jazz and street performance, choreography, dance appreciation and a performing project. The course is equivalent to one A2 level.

Contemporary dance module
Regular, in-depth contemporary technique classes to enable students to develop technical skills to a high level. There are termly assessed classes in Year 12.

Dance performance module
Three different pieces are rehearsed and performed using contemporary, street dance and jazz techniques. The emphasis is on developing performance skills.

Dance appreciation module
A study of the professional dance repertoire, where students improve skills of dance observation and analysis. Assessment takes the form of practical work, essay writing and presentations.

Choreography module
Students use their experience of different dance techniques to choreograph original works. Choreographic principles are covered and students are assessed on both a solo and group composition.

Performing to an audience module
This core unit is the culmination of the course in Year 13. Students form a performance company and produce a dance showcase at the Windmill Theatre. Students go through a rehearsal process and become involved in all aspects of producing a show

Assessment

Teacher assessed – all coursework. Final assessment is a performance at the end of year 13 in the Windmill Theatre.
