Construction BTEC First Certificate

Exam Board Edexcel

Course Content

The BTEC First Certificate offers an opportunity for learners to experience a vocational qualification which will provide an insight into the construction industry.

Three units are completed:

An Introduction to the Construction Industry
This unit provides learners with an introduction to the structure of the construction industry its social and economic significance and the wide range of work undertaken by the industry.

Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
The consequences of an accident on a construction site are often serious and sometimes fatal. The human cost of accidents is very high and can affect many people; when a person is injured or killed at work, family, friends and colleagues may all be affected. Although clearly less important than the human costs of a health and safety incident, the financial repercussions in terms of fines, compensation, lost production time and damage to corporate image can also be very high.

Exploring Carpentry and Joinery
In theory, carpentry and joinery are different trades, but in practice they have a great deal in common, using more or less the same tools and materials. Many craftspeople working with timber would consider themselves to be both carpenters and joiners, and together they comprise the largest craft group working in the construction industry today. While carpentry and joinery are practical crafts and require practical skills, they require some underpinning knowledge and understanding. This is what is covered in this unit.

Assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework assessed by the tutors at City College and externally verified by the examination board.

Possible Careers

This course is good preparation for a career in the industry and may be continued at City College for a second year to achieve the BTEC Diploma in Construction or further study in a related area.
