A Level MathsMathematics at Advanced Level is designed to be challenging and enjoyable for the conscientious student. It equips students with analytic and reasoning skills which are of proven value in the workplace. In this increasingly technological world such preparation is more important than ever. AS LevelThe course consists of three modules; Core 1&2 and Decision 1. The Core units extend work done during GCSE on topics such as Algebra and Trigonometry and introduce the new ideas of Differentiation and Integration. Decision Maths is an area of Maths looking at the solution of problems in a commercial setting, often using ICT. The teaching of these units will be divided between Mrs Hodgson and Mr Colwill with the aim of allowing students to take the Core 1 exam in January. This should enable better focus on the remaining two units which will be examined in May/June. A LevelCompletion of the full A Level qualification requires a further three units. These are, Core 3&4 and Mechanics 1. The Core units continue to explore topics central to an understanding of modern Mathematics while the Mechanics unit deals with situations arising in Engineering and related fields. These units would normally be examined at the end of Year 13.
