BTEC First Diploma in Business

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma is a qualification comprising core and specialist units, which cover aspects of knowledge, understanding and competency necessary for employment within the business sector.

The course has been designed to develop knowledge and understanding in the business sector, focusing on providing opportunities:

  • For learners to acquire technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding which are transferable to employment
  • For learners to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification to enter employment or progress to other vocational qualifications

The Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Business consists of three core units plus three specialist units that provide the completed qualification. This qualification is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s grades A* - C.

  1. Exploring Business Purposes
  2. Developing Customer Relations
  3. Investigating Financial Control

Specialist units

  1. Business Communication
  2. People in Organisations
  3. Providing Business and Administration Support
  4. Personal Selling
  5. Doing Business Online
  6. Exploring Business Enterprise*
  7. Starting a Small Business*

*Learners can study for either Unit 6: Exploring Business Enterprise or Unit 7: Starting a Small Business but not both.

The course has been designed to address the needs of Level 2 learners in key areas, including interpersonal skills and customer service.

Specialist areas also include:

  • Finance - which teaches basic financial principles
  • Business administration - which teaches practical administration skills including office systems and equipment, meetings and filing systems
  • Personal Selling - which helps learners to understand the personal selling process
  • Aspects of e-business - how these can support businesses developing
    e-business opportunities
  • Enterprise and business start-up

Assessment

The assessment approach of the BTEC course allows learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including assignment and project work, case studies, workplace assessment, role-play and oral presentation. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement.

The Future

Students studying the BTEC First Diploma in Business can progress to higher vocational courses or ‘A’ Level courses or it is a good qualification for many types of employment.
