BTEC First Certificate in Art and Design

This Art and Design course has been organised to develop a range of knowledge, skills and understanding. It encourages students to investigate and work with a wide variety of materials in a vocational context.

Students study two core units:

• 2D and 3D visual communication
• Contextual references in Art and Design

They can then add on specialist units* that include:

• Graphics * 3D Design
• Photography * Visual Arts
• Fashion * 3D Design Crafts
• Textiles * Interactive Media

*some of these choices would be available depending on staff specialisms and students interest.

This is an exciting and challenging and practical course suitable for any student looking for a one year course and who might be considering a career linked in any way to Art and Design or Textiles.

This course is the equivalent to two A-C GCSEs and is therefore seen as a bridging course between year 11 and further level three ( A level) and higher education courses.

Assessment

Assessment is through coursework only.

The Future

The BTEC in Art and Design opens doors to other further and higher education courses within the Arts.
Many choose to follow the “foundation studies” route after A2, a requirement for entry for most degree courses in Art and Design. This is available in Brighton and Hove, Eastbourne and Worthing. We have developed strong links with City College in Brighton who run a popular and oversubscribed course.
